Keith Richards

The most recent entries in this blog have been dedicated to the style of rock legends from the 60s and 70s, today is the turn for the one and only Keith Richards.

For more than 40 years, Keith along with his band, The Rolling Stones, have been on the spotlight not only for their music but for their iconic and outstanding fashions. Below a photo from the late 60s in which we can see Richards wearing some velvet trousers and an open white cotton shirt (it looks like one of the Romantic Peasant shirts that were popular in the late 60s).

White Perfection

Bryan Ferry, from Roxy Music, besides being a talented musician and performer, is known for his exquisite fashion taste (and also for the women he dated). Photographed below around 1976 with his girlfriend at the time, a young stunning model, Jerry Hall. You can't go wrong with white, especially in the summer.

Summer In Santorini

Between 1966 and 1967 Richard Avedon photographed Jean Shrimpton and Jeanloup Sieff on the island of Santorini in Greece. The settings were impressive locations that reflected the beauty of this place, as well as the "Creole" (which was back then the most impressive boat, owned by Stavros Niarchos). Below one of these photos that shows both models posing on one of the historic sites of Santorini; wearing turquoise matching outfits, simple yet elegant.

Alain Delon & Brigitte Bardot in St. Tropez

Summer is a season that definetly brings to my mind images like the one shown below, Brigitte Bardot and Alain Delon photographed on a boat, sailing around the shore of the French Riviera (probably St. Tropez) circa 1966-1968. Besides being a great example of summer fashion, for both women and men, it is a photo that depicts two French cinema icons of the 60s.

Alain Delon is wearing a short sleeve opened black shirt paired with a short length floral bathing suit. The contrast between the dark shirt and vivid colored bathing suit is brilliant.

40 years of the Moon Landing

Today, 40 years ago (July 20, 1969), an event that would change the course of history took place, the Moon landing. It was on this day when Neil Armstrong and the crew of the Apollo 11 landed on the Moon and therefore ended the Space Race.

The Moon and Space have always fascinated mankind, and it was during the 60s that this fascination became evident in fashion, especially on womenswear. Pierre Cardin was one of those designers to combine the Mod aesthetics with this Space trend in his ensembles (you can see a photo of these in a previous post from January 2009), yet many other designers (Paco Rabanne & Courreges) ventured into this trend experimenting with materials (plastic, metal, vinyl, fabrics) and shapes. Yet this galatical fascination extended into the fields of cinema, music, and television with films like "Barbarella", TV shows like Star Trek, and "Space Age Pop" (which is a lounge music subgenre that featured songs with "galatic" vibes and the use of synthetizers and moogs).

"Thats one small step for (a) Man, One giant leap for mankind" - Neil Armstrong, first man to step on the Moon

Helmut Berger

For an elegant and simple look this weekend I recommend something like what Helmut Berger is wearing in the photo below. Nothing more classic than a well fitted Lacoste Polo (I like the detailing on the sleeves) and some high rise trousers of khakis.

Stylish Summer 2009

I'm not tired of saying that Summer is my favorite season of the year for its weather and the clothes one wears. During these last couple of days several parties have been held and with them we've gotten the opportunity to see some great ensembles.

In the first photo we have Stavros Niarchos attending one of the Paris Fashion Week parties wearing a V-neck and jeans, simple, elegant, and modern.

Jay Kay from Jamiroquai (center) attended the Serpentine Party in London last weekend and was spotted wearing a velvet jacket (not appropiate imo for Summer, but hey it's Jay Kay), a black polo, some loose fitting (they remind me of bellbottoms) trousers, and pointy brown shoes.

Lapo Elkann is enjoying some days of sun and leisure at St. Tropez; wearing a very Miami Vice/late 70s inspired ensemble. I really like the color combination.

Thoughtful Beach Fashion

Herb Alpert poses on top of a rock at a beach in Southern California, looking contemplative and thoughtful on a summer day. A pair of jeans and a long sleeve jersey are a great option for strolling around the beach early in the morning this summer, when it's still a bit cool.

Basic Calvin Klein

Who ever said that a stylish wardrobe is made up of basic and a small number of clothing items, was definetly right. In times like this it is highly recommendable to buy items by their quality/functionality instead of qunatity/avant garde. At least that's what I believe. A basic and minimalistic ensemble from Calvin Klein in the early 80s is shown below. A crisp white shirt and jeans will make you look stylish this summer. I recommend that you opt for a white linen shirt and to spice up the outfit maybe wear one of those Budhist rosaries/malas.

H.S.H. Prince Rainier of Monaco

H.S.H. Prince Rainier of Monaco, who was Monaco's ruler for almost 55 years and husband of Princess Grace (Grace Kelly), is seen on this 1959 photo seated wearing a Nautic inspired outfit next to the harbor in Monte Carlo.

Egon & Grace Jones

Giving us a lesson of elegance and style in 1978, we have Prince Egon Von Furstenberg (yes, Diane Von Furstenberg's husband) with Grace Jones at the YSL Opium launch party at Studio 54.

Alain Delon face of Eau Savage

Alain Delon, one of the male fashion icons featured frequently in this blog, is currently the face of the "Eau Savage" (Dior) campaign. A fragance created in 1966, the year Delon was photographed below by photographer Jean Francois Perrier in St. Tropez.

Although this image is a repost, I thought it would be interesting to post a color version of it along with this news tidbit.

Simply McQueen

Steve McQueen on the photo below is a great example of what I mentioned in my previous post, "less is more". Wearing what appears to be some khakis and plain white T-shirt, along with his sunglasses (probably Persol Rattis) he enjoyed a day at the harbor. Photos like this one not only allow the appreciation of McQueen's iconic style, but also that life's biggest and most treasured moments are those that come in a spontaneous, unplanned, and casual manner.

To round up this post I'd like to share a quote that I discovered a few days ago while listening to a rendition of the 1967 hit "Live For Life", theme song for the movie with the same name starred by Candice Bergen & Yves Montand.

"Yesterday's a memory gone for good forever, while tomorrow is a guess, what is real is what is now and here; and now is only what we possess"
